Damage to your property is always a traumatic event. Seemingly minor water damage improperly dealt with can grow into a challenging mold and odor problem. When we experience a major flooding event, it can be traumatic and extremely unsettling. If you can take proper decisive action right away, you will not only help mitigate continuing damage from water migrating into unaffected areas which will actually lessen the current stressful state and alleviate the possibility of it expanding. If it’s not from the sewer, there are some things you can do to protect your property before the professionals arrive to fix the damage.

Safety First!

* If it is safe, turn off your power at the breaker panel – may not
be necessary in minor water damage situations

* Do not enter your basement if you know or suspect water has risen
above the level of electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, the furnace or is
near your electrical panel. Electricity can move through water or wet
flooring and cause a severe electrical shock.

* Do not turn on light switches in and around standing water

* Do not turn on ceiling fans if there has been water in the ceiling

* Do not use your household vacuum to remove water

* Do not use TVs or other household appliances while standing on wet
carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.

* Do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

If It Came From The Sewer

* Stay out of affected areas.

* Treat all wet areas as if they could contaminate

* Turn off the HVAC system if it is safe to enter the area of your
thermostat

If It Is Not From The Sewer And There Are No Electrical Hazards

* Remove cardboard boxes – lettering dyes transfer to the carpet

* Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet
carpeting.

* Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.

* Remove Oriental rugs from wet flooring.

* Remove valuable paintings, photos and art objects to a safe, dry
place.

* Open and place luggage in sunlight to dry if possible.

* Gather loose items, toys, etc. from floors.

* Remove wet fabrics and dry as soon as possible.

* Remove books, magazines or other coloured items on wet carpets or
floors.

* Do not use your household vacuum to remove water.

* Do not use TVs or other household appliances while standing on wet
carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
